End of May Update

Hi there!

Thanks for following along, here is a floor by floor update of what we have accomplished with the renovation projects:

B2: The new compact shelving is installed and filled with government docs, former reference books, and bound and current periodicals. The microfilm rack which held newspapers  and some periodicals will be re-established here as well as a map and atlas section. The posting of signage will continue.

First floor: All of the former shelving has been removed (note: all metal and paper is recycled). The liaison offices have walls up as do the new study rooms and writing center and academic skills center outpost rooms.  Staff spaces are being modified and a window has been added so that staff can look out onto the first floor and our users can look in. There is also work on the new hallway that will lead people into the building from the rear of the building.

Second floor: The former “quiet study room” will house administration, interlibrary loan, library systems, digital production services, and the digital scholarship lab. The walls are now up and it’s easy to see how the new area will look. The former periodicals area has been removed to make way for the new quiet study room and quiet study spaces.

Third Floor/TLC: The old floor coverings have been removed to make way for a facelift. This includes the stairwell leading up to the TLC.

Restrooms: Working restrooms are limited in BML at this time. It’s going to be worth it though. Among the new plumbing fixtures will be a water fountain that will fill drinking bottles.

Stay tuned!

May 9 Update

Hi everyone! Hammers are hammering and drills are drilling. Every day there is more progress. It is hard to believe that we have only been under construction for a week and a half.

At this point the new shelving on B2 will be constructed atop the carriages starting Thursday. We fully expect to start putting the materials from the first and second floor on them starting Monday May 14. Ideally, this move will take place in a week so that work can proceed on the first and second floors. The new areas will house the new study spaces and liaison librarian offices.

Up on the second floor new offices in the former quiet study room are beginning to take shape, studs are up and drywall will soon follow. Electrical work continues as well as a remodel of most of our restrooms in BML.

It will continue to be noisy at BML.

Restrooms in Boatwright

Visitors to Boatwright:  If you need to know what restrooms are available in the building, please ask at our front desk.  Right now, you can use restrooms on the 2nd floor in the Media Resource Center and the back hallway restrooms on Basement Level 1.

First week in review

Much progress was made this week. All of the demolition for the second floor staff offices and new restrooms is now complete and the first signs of new walls are appearing already.

The track for the new compact shelving down on B2 has been laid down and the new wood between the track is going in. The carpet will be put back into place next week. There is already a “test carriage” in place to check the track.

Most of the staff have settled into their temporary summer quarters. Moving entire offices was a monumental task all on its own. Be sure to ask at the main service desk as to where folks are located.

Restrooms are scarce at Boatrwight! There is a restroom on B1 still in service and so is one in the MRC. The rest of them are under renovation. The staff restroom came back on line and the handy new “staff cut through” is now complete.

Next week will bring us much more progress. A hearty “thank you” to all who have helped out this week.
